There are many things I miss about home, and many things they have here in Peru that I wish existed in America. But in absolute first place OMIGOD How Did I Ever Live Without This territory is Cruz Del Sur.
Cruz Del Sur is an executive bus company which runs long distance routes all over Peru. It´s expensive by Peruvian standards, but cheap compared to any form of transit in the US ($30 for my first-class ticket to Arequipa).
Imagine a Greyhound bus. A clean greyhound bus. With wide, comfortable seats that recline and have La-Z-Boy style foot rests. There are multiple clean restrooms on this bus, which is staffed with a team of drivers and attendants. During your trip, you will be served hot meals appropriate to the time of day. Relatively non-horrible films will be screened, and there will be free Wi-Fi onboard.
This is Cruz del Sur.
I never thought 16 hours on a bus overnight through the mountains in a developing country could be this good. Seriously, we need this in America, especially outside the Northeast where distances are long and other affordable travel options are hard to come by. I´d certainly rather travel this way than fly Airtran or Southwest, or drive for 2 days.
